Placed in continuity with the shaft of the penis, the foreskin is a retractable skin formation: with the erection of the male genital organ, in fact, it gradually slides backwards, until the glans is uncovered (to which it is connected via the so-called penile frenulum).
The foreskin is highly vascularized and rich in nerve endings; this makes it a skin area particularly sensitive to stimulations aimed at arousal and sexual pleasure.
The foreskin can be the victim of some medical conditions, including phimosis, postitis, and balanoposthitis.
The foreskin is also known to be the portion of skin subject to removal during circumcision operations.
The foreskin is not a simple flap of skin placed to cover the glans, when the penis is flaccid, but it is something much more complex, which participates in the erection process of the male genital organ.
