Middle Ear: Anatomy, Function and Pathologies

Preceded by the outer ear and followed by the inner ear, the middle ear is responsible for amplifying the acoustic waves before they reach the cochlea, ie the organ responsible for converting acoustic information into a nerve impulse.
The middle ear is made up of: eardrum, tympanic cavity, the so-called three ossicles, auditory tube, oval window and round window; it also includes muscles, nerves and blood vessels.
The middle ear can be affected by various diseases and conditions, including perforation of the eardrum, cholesteatoma and otitis media.
