Cerebral Cortex: What is it? Anatomy and Function

Representing 42% of the entire brain mass, the cerebral cortex has evident grooves, which take the name of grooves (or fissures), alternating with raised areas, whose name is convolutions (or turns).
The cerebral cortex plays a pivotal role in the control of the most important cognitive abilities (eg: memory, learning, calculation, etc.) and in the management of sensory functions and voluntary movements; this makes it the main center for processing and integrating nerve information present at the level of the central nervous system.
