There are two essential fatty acids:
- Alpha linolenic acid (ALA): parent and precursor of the other omega 3, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
- Linoleic acid: progenitor and precursor of the other omega 6, arachidonic acid (AA), gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and diomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA).
