VITAMINS AND ANTIOXIDANTS: colorful category of chemical substances found above all in plant foods; they are particularly concentrated in citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, green tea, broccoli and in general in fresh fruit and vegetables. We find some of these substances, isolated and purified, even in hair supplements (flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, water-soluble vitamins, folic acid and various plant extracts).
For what has been said so far, hair loss can be attributed to the diet if the following conditions exist:
- Vegan diet (the combination of reduced intake of sulfur amino acids and high fiber intake proves to be particularly damaging to the health of the hair);
- Abuse of bran supplements or excessively high fiber diets (some substances, such as phytic acid, limit the absorption of iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium).
- Caloric-protein malnutrition: a common reality not only in developing countries, but also in the most advanced nations; we think, for example, of hospitalized patients or those who follow particularly restrictive diets in the illusion of being able to lose weight.
- Little or no consumption of fruit and vegetables.
In all these cases you can safely take hair supplements, as long as the choice of the most suitable product takes place under the advice of a doctor or other qualified figures. In fact, in each of the cases listed there are specific deficiencies, which can only be filled by certain products (not all supplements perform the same function).
If the diet is sufficiently varied and balanced, hair loss is more likely to depend on other factors; in such conditions, simple supplementation may not have the desired effects, although it may prove useful to mitigate the problem.
