Cholinergic antagonist drugs of muscarinic receptors
Recall that the M3 muscarinic receptors, stimulated by acetylcholine, induce bronchoconstriction by stimulating the contraction of bronchial smooth muscle, the muscarinic receptor antagonists prevent acetylcholine from stimulating these receptors, preventing bronchoconstriction; they also reduce bronchial secretion favoring the patency of the airways. The muscarinic antagonist par excellence is atropine, which, however, cannot be used as an anti-asthmatic due to its side effects.ipratropium: of a synthetic nature, it is an asymptomatic bronchodilator with fewer side effects than atropine, since it has a poor systemic absorption. Administered in formulations to be inhaled, it exerts its effect after 30 minutes from the intake, with a duration of action that is prolonged by the 3 to 5 hours It is a safe drug and can be associated with β2-stimulants and steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
