SOME PLANTS IMPORTED FROM THE AMERICAS TO EUROPE
TURKISH WHEAT: Zea mays, fam. Grasses; very important product for food, therapeutic (absorbent properties), pharmacotechnical (starch used as excipient) and cosmetic purposes.
POTATO: Solanum tuberosum;
MANIOC: Manihot very useful;
PEANUT: Arachis hypogea, fam. Legumes; peanut oil is used in the formulation of various dermo-functional products.
COTTON: Gossypium hirsutum; used for the production of bandages, plasters and fabrics. The cottonseed is covered with non-excretory protective hairs, which are scraped off and then worked into threads. Cotton oil is extracted from the hairless seeds, which was used raw for food in Asian populations. It was observed, however, that these populations regenerated little and later discovered that unrefined cottonseed oil strongly limits male fertility; the responsible substance is gossypol, a bisesquiterpene. For this property it was thought to use gossypol as an active ingredient in contraceptive drugs, but in large concentrations gossypol causes the onset of testicular tumors.
Gossypol is a metabolic poison for spermatozoa, it prevents their motility by blocking the respiratory function of their mitochondria. From this point of view, the pharmaceutical importance of cotton has been transitory.
SUNFLOWER: Helianthus annus, fam. Composite; characterized by a typical flower head inflorescence. The squeezing of the sunflower seeds gives the sunflower oil of alimentary, medicinal and herbalistic importance.
PUMPKIN: Cucurbita pepo.
AVOCADO: Persea grateful.
SWEET PEPPER: Capsicum annum, fam. Solanaceae; herbaceous species of which there are different varieties, of dietary and herbal importance. Chilli has phytotherapeutic relevance as an antirheumatic, because it draws blood to the tissues, and digestive, because it stimulates gastric secretion.
STRAWBERRY: Fragaria for ananassa, rich in vitamin C.
TOBACCO: Nicotiana tabacum; used as a luxury drug; Studies have been conducted on nicotine to treat the tremors of Alzahimer's disease.
PINEAPPLE: Pineapple sativus; is an infructescence consisting of many berries, rich in vitamins, flavonoids and a proteolytic enzyme, bromelain, which takes its name from the fam. of pineapple (Bromeliad). Therefore the pineapple preparation, taken before or during meals, promotes protein digestion.
COCOA: Theobroma cacao; a sacred plant for pre-Columbian populations; cocoa beans are the drug, used mainly as a flavoring.
