We speak of jaundice in the presence of a yellow pigmentation of the skin, mucous membranes and ocular sclerae, conferred by the deposit of excess bilirubin present in the blood.
In relation to the different intensity of the jaundice color, we speak of SUB-Jaundice when it is recognizable only at the level of the sclerae and the sublingual mucosa (bilirubin levels between 1.7mg / dL and 4.5 mg / dL), and of ITTERO FRANCO when all the integuments are clearly impregnated (bilirubin levels above 4.5mg / dL).
Bilirubin arises from the breakdown of aged or damaged red blood cells and is processed by the liver which transforms it into direct bilirubin. Once the jaundice has been recognized, it is therefore necessary to establish whether it is due to the excess of direct bilirubin (conjugated with glucuronic acid) or indirect (not yet processed by the liver); in the first case it is very probable an "obstruction of the biliary tract (stones in the gallbladder or biliary tract, pancreatitis, neoplasms of the biliary tract or head of the pancreas, cyst), while in the second the presence of damage to the liver (hepatitis viral or toxic) or haemolytic anemia.
Considering the seriousness of the possible diseases underlying jaundice, herbal medicine does not offer specific remedies against jaundice. On the contrary, particular caution should also be used in the use of choleretic and cholagogue plants, because they could increase the flow of bile secretion and with it is the migration of microcalculations.
