Barberry in Herbalist: Property of Barberry
Barberry, used in the past as a bitter-tonic, blood purifier and urinary disinfectant, can be nephrotoxic and cause side effects on the cardiorespiratory system (vasodilating and slowing down cardiac activity); therefore, its use as a phytotherapeutic is to be abandoned.
The cosmetic use of barberry is specifically prohibited.
