Harpagophyte - Chemical constituents

• Iridoid monoterpenic glucosides (procumbide, harpagoside and harpagide);
• Phytosterols (betasitosterol and stigmasterol);
• Carbohydrates;
• Polyphenols;
• Triterpenes (oleanolic acid and ursolic acid);
• Flavonoids;
• Aromatic acids (caffeic, cinnamic, chlorogenic)

Harpagophyte in Herbalist: Property of the Harpagophyte

The harpagophyte has mainly anti-inflammatory properties. The therapeutic activity manifests itself after about a week of latency and consists of an anti-inflammatory action (due to the blocking of prostaglandin synthesis), peripheral analgesic, myorelaxant (for the regulation of calcium flow in the muscles smooth), cardioprotective and antiarrhythmic, hypocholesterolemic.

The harpagophyte is used against hepatopathies, biliary tract affections, nephropathies and bladder affections. The main uses of the harpagophyte concern however the treatment of arthritic and rheumatic episodes, acute or chronic, and arthrosis.

Harpagophyte ointments, obtained from fresh roots, were applied to the abdomen in case of difficult births. However, the preparations are not recommended during pregnancy, due to their stimulating activity on uterine contractility.

Pharmacological interactions

• increased gastric injury caused by NSAIDs and cortisone drugs;
• possible summation of effects with hypotensive and hypoglycemic drugs;
• purpura in case of simultaneous use of Warfarin.

Contraindications

Do not use the herbal medicine in pediatrics, pregnant and lactating, in case of acute gastropathies, peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Avoid the use of the harpagophyte in case of ascertained hypersensitivity to one or more components.

Side effects

Following the intake of harpagophyte, epigastralgia, nausea, gastric hyperacidity, diarrhea and abdominal pain may occur.
