Description

The myrtle is an evergreen, aromatic shrub, which reaches a height of 3-5 m. The stems of the myrtle bear glossy, leathery, opposite leaves; at their armpit flowers are born with 5 white or pink petals and many prominent stamens, which they open at the beginning of summer and are fragrant. The fruits are round and edible berries, about 1 cm in diameter and of a reddish-blue color, covered by a bluish bloom when they ripen (between November and January) and contain many seeds .

Areal

It is said that the myrtle grew spontaneously in Greece, in southern Italy and in all the islands exposed to the wind and the sun. It is common in the Mediterranean scrub, but also in the mountains. Myrtle has also been cultivated since ancient times for both food and ornamental purposes (to make hedges). Known to the Greeks, who derived many legends from it, myrtle was also used by the Romans to treat ulcers and diseases of the respiratory system; in the Middle Ages from the flowers a perfume called "water of the angels" was obtained and it was also used as ink.

Drug

Currently, berries are mainly used for the preparation of wines and liqueurs (Sardinia, Corsica). The leaves of the myrtle are also used, rich in tannins and essential oil (0.5%), containing monoterpenic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and other substances.

Uses

The parts of the plant used are the leaves and flowering tops.
The most common uses are food: the infusion of ripe berries in alcohol and water plus honey gives the classic myrtle liqueur; the leaves and berries are used fresh or dried for fillings and as an ideal spice for game, while the branches are used. to flavor the meat on the spit.
In phytotherapy, myrtle is used against leucorrhoea, hemorrhoids and in lung diseases as a sedative for bronchitis. It is also used as a hepatostimulant, against insomnia, psoriasis, meteorism. In high doses it is harmful (nausea, depression) and irritates the mucous membranes.
In cosmetics, the essence is used in perfumery and in aromatherapy for massages, baths and frictions.
