Also known as azidothymidine (AZT), zidovudine can be administered orally (capsules, oral solution) or parenteral (concentrate for solution for infusion). Medicines that contain it are classified as hospital drugs available in pharmacies (band H) upon presentation of a specific medical prescription. In detail, those containing only zidovudine, in order to be dispensed, require a limiting repeatable medical prescription or RRL (drugs that can be sold to the public only on prescription from hospitals or specialists); while medicinal products containing zidovudine in combination with other active ingredients require the presentation of a non-repeatable restrictive medical prescription or RNRL.
