Progesterone as a Drug: What is it for? When is it used?

Progesterone medicines are different and can be formulated as vaginal pessaries or creams, soft capsules for oral and vaginal use, and solution for injection.

In order to be sold, progesterone-based injectable drugs require a non-repeatable medical prescription (RNR); while for the other progesterone-based medicines (oral and vaginal formulations), the presentation of a repeatable medium prescription (RR) is sufficient.

Some of these medicines are classified as class A drugs, therefore, their cost can be reimbursed by the National Health System (NHS); others, on the other hand, are classified as class C drugs, therefore, their cost is fully borne by the citizen.
