a moderately persistent tanned appearance, but without resorting to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. For this reason, it is also known as a sunless tanner.

Self-tanning products generally come in fluid form, similar to sunscreens, lotions or gels; once applied to the skin, after an adequate exposure time, an amber color similar to that given by the sun's rays is obtained.
A healthy, lasting and uniform tan is obtained gradually after about 7-10 days of exposure to the sun, as a consequence of the activation of melanin. The "self tan" effect, on the other hand, is the result of chemical interaction between DHA (dihydroxyacetone, the active ingredient of the tanner; INCI: Dihydroxyacetone) and the amino acids of the keratin present in the most superficial layer of the skin (stratum corneum).
