E509 CALCIUM CHLORIDE
Calcium chloride is a natural salt which, when used as a food additive, has two main functions, that of being an acidity regulator and that of improving the texture of canned fruit and vegetables.
It can be contained in various products, such as canned fruit and vegetables, certain cheeses, olives, various industrial alcoholic beverages, etc.
It is also used as a source of calcium in food supplements.
It comes in the form of hygroscopic powder or white, odorless deliquescent crystals.
Anhydrous calcium chloride: easily soluble in water and ethanol
Dihydrate: easily soluble in water, soluble in ethanol
Hexahydrate: very soluble in water and in ethanol
This additive is also used in the industry for the manufacture of antifreeze for refrigerators, glues, cement, to preserve wood and rock and also for the dust of fire extinguishers.
At the moment there are conflicting theses on the effects that this additive can have on human health: some researchers think that it can cause heart rhythm and digestive disorders, cause vomiting and nausea; for others, however, it is harmless, therefore it does not present negative side effects on human health.
Since there is no certainty about the effects that this additive can have on human health, it is not recommended to consume high doses.
