The term pubalgia refers to all those affections that cause painful symptoms in the pubic area, which often tends to radiate along the antero-medial aspect of the thigh or along the lower abdominal wall.
According to some authors, the causes of this disease can be several dozen but almost always involve the proximal insertions of the adductor muscles and the rectus abdominis; here then it would be more appropriate to speak of "pubalgia syndrome".
This pathology can be disabling, especially for the sportsman forced to long absences from training and competitions, also because often, even today, groin pain therapies do not guarantee satisfactory results.
From the data collected from the scientific literature, in particular from the most recent studies on the subject of groin pain, but not only, the importance of implementing preventive measures during the training phase emerges to be integrated with sport-specific technical exercises, football I our case.
Here are some effective interventions to be implemented in the field:
- Warm-up with exercises based mainly on dynamic stretching, replacing the forms of static elongation, which mainly concern the coxo-femoral joint, paying greater attention to details: amplitude and dynamism of the movement; the movements should simulate, with the maximum amplitude of excursion articulate, the technical gesture that will then be made during the game;
- Muscle toning work mainly, but not exclusively, in a closed kinetic chain, with exercises that respect the kinematics of the player's gestures, activating a concentric-eccentric contraction regime at high execution speed;
- Gradual program of exercises based on changes of direction; the game of football is characterized by races with changes of direction performed at different speeds, with marked phases of concentric (accelerating) and eccentric (braking) work; the latter is often neglected in training and would require more attention, especially in the colder seasonal periods;
- Specific work on "core stability", which in addition to not creating trauma to the spine and tensions in the pubic area compared to the more classic exercises for the abdominals, often still performed incorrectly, increases the "sense of posture", "balance and awareness body of the athlete;
- Use a concatenation of specific exercises, a few minutes, before and after intense workouts and matches, especially if the player manifests muscle tension and fatigue, which involve micro-movements of the coxo-femoral joint;
- Correctly modulate the different training loads, customizing the physical exercise for those athletes who have already suffered from in the past pubalgia syndrome, in such a way as to allow the body to benefit from optimal supercompensation and avoid unnecessary functional overloads which, repeated, could damage the weaker structures of the locomotor system;
- Educate or re-educate athletes during exercises to assume adequate postures, not risky but functional.
Taking care of these few precautions, it is possible to form the basis of an effective strategy for the prevention of pubalgic syndrome, to be implemented in the gym and in the field, knowing how to integrate the "specific technical-tactical training, football in this case, with" training " functional "and" postural ", this is the task of a competent staff and athletic trainer.
