Therapy
Basically it is necessary to ensure that the colon eliminates its contents at least every 2 days.
A frequency of evacuation once every two and maximum three days (three or at most two weekly evacuations) is therefore to be considered physiological.
Great importance must be given to the hydration of the intestinal contents; in principle, our body, physiologically, needs at least two liters of liquids to be taken every day.
When we regularly take less of it, the body recovers water by reducing the production of urine and / or by increasing the reabsorption of water from the contents of the colon; in this case the digestive residues will become more arid, making their slower and more difficult expulsion.
Therefore, it is often sufficient to drink more fluids and increase the fiber content of the diet, to significantly improve constipation.
If the increase in the introduction of liquids and fibers is not sufficient to regularize the intestine, it will be necessary to resort to fragacological therapy.
The drugs commonly used have different actions: they can reduce the absorption of water allowing greater hydration of the contents of the colon, they can act by stimulating the motility of the colon muscles, or, finally, block the inhibition of motility, that is, block the effects of the "brain-gut axis".
Moreover, the prolonged use of drugs over the years causes addiction to them, with progressive reduced effectiveness.
For about 3 years, we have been using a non-pharmacological method of neurostimulation: the FREMS Therapy.
FREMS Therapy
Position of the electrodes placed along the course of the colon:
It is a trans cutaneous neurostimulation technique (no needles or any type of chemical or pharmacological substances are used); substantially through electrodes positioned on the skin (as shown in the image) we deliver electric fields formed by pulsed currents with variable frequency, very low pulse time and moderate voltage, created in the bioengineering research laboratory.
The pulsed currents generated by the neurostimulator are able to act on the innervation of the colon muscles, modifying the concentration of the cells responsible for producing "Serotonin" (called enterochromaffins), which, as we mentioned at the beginning, is the neuromodulator necessary to regulate , among other functions, the motility of the colon.
The results obtained in about 100 treated patients were extremely satisfactory as we observed a physiological resumption of the evacuations, with a daily frequency or at most 2 weekly evacuations without taking laxatives.
