The adjective cholesterol-lowering is reserved for any dietary, behavioral, pharmacological or other type of treatment, capable of reducing plasma cholesterol levels. There are really many supplements and foods that promise results in this sense, but their effectiveness is limited to upstream from the fact that the cholesterol values depend for about 80% on the synthesis inside the organism and only for 20% on the dietary intake; if this is reduced upstream, the positive effect of the various cholesterol-lowering supplements which act by reducing intestinal lipid absorption (fiber supplements, plant sterols, etc.) is therefore limited.
