normal (emmetrope) sees both distant and close objects well. If the light rays reflected from an object are not adequately focused on the retina, however, the vision is distorted. Many causes can produce this effect, some of which depend on the lens and the cornea: the so-called refractive errors (ametropias) are responsible for impaired vision.
