Limbic System: What is it? Anatomy and Functions

The limbic system includes elements of the brain, including the amygdala, the hippocampus, the nucleus accumbens, the lobe and the orbitofrontal, piriform and entorhinal cortices, and elements of the diencephalon, such as the hypothalamus and the anterior nuclei of the thalamus.
The limbic system is involved in emotional reactions, behavioral responses, short and long-term memory, "learning," smell, perception of time, motivation and reward mechanisms, in the sense of gratification deriving from the achievement of a goal and attention.
