The reasons that make it necessary to remove this organ, located in the anterior region of the neck, may be different; thyroidectomy, for example, can be performed for thyroid cancer, for the presence of a thyroid nodule, for a condition of hyperthyroidism or for a situation of goiter.
The surgical procedure, which can take place in at least three different ways, does not require special preparation, except in the case of hyperthyroidism.
Without the thyroid we cannot live; therefore, after a total thyroidectomy, it is necessary to plan an "adequate replacement therapy based on synthetic thyroid hormones.
