Mucilage - What Are They?
Mucilages are normal cellular constituents of some algae (agar-agar) and plants; in the latter they are concentrated above all in the seeds, where they perform the peculiar function of retaining water to prevent it from drying out.
From the chemical point of view - although they have not yet been exactly defined - they are formed by heterogeneous polysaccharides, which in contact with water expand, forming colloidal solutions, viscous but not adhesive (the latter characteristic which differentiates them from rubber) .
Properties and Uses
The phytotherapeutic interest for mucilages derives from their ability to swell in contact with water, forming plastic masses or viscous dispersions which, once ingested, can have a good activity:
- laxative (make the stool softer and stimulate the progression of intestinal contents)
- anorectic (by dilating the walls of the stomach, they suppress the stimulus of hunger).
- They also demonstrate a certain effectiveness in counteracting inflammation of the respiratory tract (expectorant, antitussive properties), irritation of the digestive tract and intestinal inflammation; they are also used externally to prepare packs with soothing properties.
Against constipation
Classic remedy against constipation, they represent a sweet laxative of natural origin which, unlike many other products with a more drastic action (purgative), has few undesirable effects, mostly limited to the possible appearance of flatulence, bloating and abdominal cramps.
Instead, they are contraindicated when constipation is due to a "mechanical obstruction.
Against high cholesterol and diabetes
By reducing the absorption of cholesterol and positively modulating that of sugars, some mucilages can make an important contribution in the fight against hypercholesterolemia and in the prevention of diabetes.
How to use
The isolated mucilages are difficult to preserve and for this reason they are taken through drugs that are particularly rich in them, such as psyllium seeds, marshmallow, guar gum, mallow and linseed.
