Treating Genital Herpes
Although there is no definitive cure for genital herpes, some antiviral medicines have been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms and decreasing the risk of future episodes. These drugs are also useful in decreasing the chances of infecting your sexual partner.
The choice of therapy is made by the doctor based on the frequency of the episodes and the simultaneous presence of other diseases. The active ingredients most effective in countering the action of herpes viruses are aciclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir.

Genital Herpes and Pregnancy
The treatment of acute episodes of genital herpes during pregnancy deserves a separate discussion. In these cases, the virus can infect the newborn at the time of delivery, causing serious complications such as vision changes, mental retardation or even premature death. The greatest danger exists if the disease is first contracted during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Given the gravity of these situations, a caesarean section is often used to avoid the risk of contagion.
If, on the other hand, the woman has already contracted the disease during her life, the risk of infecting her child is very low.
