CITRIZAN ® is a drug based on equine catalase
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Enzymes - Heparin for topical use
Indications CITRIZAN ® Catalase
CITRIZAN ® is indicated to facilitate the healing of chronic skin ulcers, burns and traumatic wounds.
Mechanism of action CITRIZAN ® Catalase
The therapeutic activity of CITRIZAN ® is evidently linked to the presence of its active principle, catalase, an enzyme with a strong antioxidant power generally included in the pull of endogenous antioxidants.
Used topically, this enzyme concentrates at the wound level, where it carries out its biological activity by breaking down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, thus determining:
- a reduction of oxygen free radicals, and in particular of hydrogen peroxide, the oxidizing element responsible for oxidative damage following a traumatic event;
- an increase in the local oxygen content, necessary for the optimization of the repair processes including the deposition of collagen fibers and the consequent scarring of the wound.
The absence of systemic absorption obviously makes the use of CITRIZAN ® safe and free from clinically relevant side effects.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
CATALASE IN GEL AND VITILIGO
FASEB J. 2013 Apr 29. [Epub ahead of print]
Basic evidence for epidermal H2O2 / ONOO - mediated oxidation / nitration in segmental vitiligo is supported by repigmentation of skin and eyelashes after reduction of epidermal H2O2 with topical NB-UVB-activated pseudocatalase PC-KUS.
Schallreuter KU, Salem MA, Holtz S, Panske A.
Very recent study that evaluates the possibility of using catalase-based gels in the treatment of non-segmental Vitiligo, given its pathogenesis characterized by a strong oxidizing impact, mediated precisely by hydrogen peroxide and reactive nitrogen derivatives.
CATALASE AND CORNEA
Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 1993 Aug; 34: 2752-60.
Does topical hydrogen peroxide penetrate the cornea?
Wilson G, Riley MV.
Interesting work that demonstrates the ability of the mucosal endogenous antioxidant systems, most likely also constituted by catalase, to effectively detoxify the cornea and conjunctiva from hydrogen peroxide.
CHLOROXYLOENOL IN UROPATHOGEN INFECTIONS
Clin Microbiol Infect. 2008 Feb; 14: 190-2. Epub 2007 Nov 28.
In-vitro activity and in-vivo efficacy of catheters impregnated withchloroxylenol and thymol against uropathogens.
Mansouri MD, Darouiche RO.
Clinical trial that tests the efficacy of Catalase-based gel in the treatment of superficial second degree burns, comparing it to that of other topical drugs, and verifying the excellent tolerability against a modest efficacy.
Method of use and dosage
CITRIZAN ®
Gel for topical use of 800,000 I.U. of Catalase per 100 gr of product.
Generally, the application of the correct amount of gel, necessary to cover the burned or ulcerated region, once or twice a day according to medical indications, is able to optimize the wound healing and healing process.
CITRIZAN ® Catalase warnings
The use of CITRIZAN ® must necessarily be preceded by a careful medical examination aimed at assessing the extent of the lesion and the prescribing appropriateness of the drug.
It is necessary to thoroughly cleanse the affected region before applying the drug, taking care to avoid its use on infected wounds, for which antibiotic therapy would also be appropriate.
Prolonged use of CITRIZAN ®, like any other topical product, could lead to the onset of adverse reactions also due to hypersensitivity to the drug.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
The use of CITRIZAN ® during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding should only be carried out in cases of real need and under the strict supervision of your doctor.
Interactions
It is recommended to avoid the contextual use of other topical drugs
Contraindications CITRIZAN ® Catalase
The use of CITRIZAN ® is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the active substance or to one of its excipients.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
The appropriate use of CITRIZAN ® is generally safe and well tolerated, although local side effects characterized by irritation, erythema and dermatitis emerge from the various clinical trials and post-marketing experience.
It is also useful to consider the heterologous nature of catalase, sometimes responsible for hypersensitivity reactions.
Note
CITRIZAN ® is a prescription drug.
