of the whole body.
It does not simulate any physiological movement or athletic gesture; in fact, its name refers specifically to the elliptical motion performed by the lower limbs.
The elliptical trainer was born as an alternative to the classic treadmill and exercise bike. It also avoids some adverse effects - of an articular nature - linked to running and pedaling movements in predisposed subjects.
This does not mean, of course, that it is free of contraindications; although in general its movement is well tolerated also by those with back problems (lumbago), coxofemoral joint and knees (meniscus, ligaments, ilio-tibial band syndrome, etc.).
The types equipped with "sticks" for the use of the arms also allow to stimulate the upper part of the body, activating the entire locomotor system (total-body).
That said, speaking of an elliptical "in the singular" is not entirely correct; this is because there are various types, which can be classified according to numerous criteria. In addition to the presence or absence of appendages for the movement of the upper limbs, they can be divided according to the technological level, price, size, etc.
