To tell the truth, opinions about it are conflicting and the safety of use of enamel in pregnancy arouses several conflicting opinions. Despite this, in general, many believe that the product under discussion can also be used by women. future mothers, provided that some precautions and precautions are adopted, such as:
- Use quality nail polishes and, above all, of known origin. Therefore, be wary of glazes with unknown names and without labels that can be found in flea markets or cheap shops.
- Use enamels free of hazardous substances, such as toluene, formaldehyde and phthalates (in particular, dibutyl phthalate - DBT). Nowadays, glazes containing these substances are very rare, however, it is always good to check the list of ingredients - INCI. If the ingredients are not specified, avoid purchasing the nail polish.
- Once you have identified the right nail polish, be sure to apply it in a well-ventilated place avoiding inhaling the vapors of the product; in fact, even if toluene, phthalates or formaldehyde are not present, it is always good to avoid breathing the vapors of the substances used to make the enamel. In addition, the smell of the product may be too strong for the future mother, causing nausea or even vomiting. During gestation, in fact, women tend to become more sensitive to different types of odors.
- Apply the nail polish as precisely as possible, avoiding "smudging" on the skin area surrounding the nail, thus avoiding applying the nail polish on the skin.
- Avoid biting your nails in order not to ingest parts of the nail polish.
- To remove nail polish in pregnancy, use safe, quality nail polish remover and free from hazardous substances. If in doubt, it is always good to carefully read the ingredient list of the product.
- Similarly to what has been said for the application of nail polish during pregnancy, its removal must also be carried out in well-ventilated places, avoiding breathing the solvent vapors.
In truth, the above precautions should be followed by all women, regardless of whether they are pregnant or not. However, if for non-pregnant women the above precautions can be adopted in a "more flexible" way, pregnant women cannot afford to go wrong in any way.
In any case, the application of nail polish during pregnancy should not cause any harm to the fetus, since the substances contained in the product are generally not absorbed by the nails.
However, since the application of nail polish during pregnancy for aesthetic purposes is not essential, as a precaution, the use of the product in question could be avoided until the end of the gestation period.
