Definition
In the medical field, the term addiction is intended to indicate a particular condition in which an individual afflicted by the absolute need to take a certain substance - such as, for example, drugs or narcotic substances - or to adopt certain behaviors, as occurs, for example , in the case of gambling addiction.
It is not yet completely clear what are the mechanisms at the origin of addiction; however, it is believed that in the etiology of this pathological condition there may be the involvement of neurotransmitters fundamental for our central nervous system, such as, for example, dopamine and serotonin.
Types of Addiction
There are many types of addiction known to date. They can develop both towards certain substances and towards certain behaviors or attitudes.
First of all, it should be noted that addiction - regardless of its object - can occur in two different forms, sometimes present at the same time: physical dependence and psychic dependence.
