Generality
Ademetionine - also known as S-adenosyl-methionine - is an amino acid naturally present in the body. In detail, ademetionine is a coenzyme capable of transferring methyl groups.
The trans-methylation reactions carried out with the aid of ademetionine are indispensable in the synthesis of the phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes, but this is not the only action carried out by the aforementioned amino acid.
Ademetionine, in fact, is ubiquitous in tissues and organs and takes part in numerous metabolic reactions. In particular, this molecule is very interesting from a pharmaceutical point of view, as it is involved in the synthesis of some types of neurotransmitters - such as, serotonin and dopamine - involved in mood regulation mechanisms, but not only. In fact, ademetionine also exerts interesting activities in the liver, where it is able to favor the synthesis of sulfur compounds involved in hepatic detoxification mechanisms.
