How it is determined
The physical constitution of a subject is normally established by detecting its skeletal diameters and comparing them with those of the reference population.
- Slim constitution;
- Average constitution;
- Robust constitution.
These measurements are normally carried out at the wrist, elbow, shoulders, hip and knee level.

Pignet index
To determine the physical constitution of a subject, the Pignet index does not make use of the measurements of the skeletal diameters of the wrist, elbow, shoulders, hip or knee; rather it exploits the chest circumference and the fundamental anthropometric measurements (height and body weight):
Pignet index = height (cm) - [weight (kg) + chest circumference (cm)]
