Generality
For pink grapefruit (variety of yellow grapefruit) means a fruit, more precisely a citrus fruit, similar to an orange, with a lighter and smoother peel, and the pulp that oscillates between pink and red; the taste is sour, bitter and sweet.
The pink grapefruit is the "hesperidium (berry) of a plant belonging to the family of Rutaceae, type Citrus and species C. havens (C. maxima x C. sinensis). NB. According to International code of botanical nomenclature, the "× -" (pronounced "for") replaces the prefix "notho-" and indicates cultivated hybrids. The pink grapefruit is therefore a hybrid obtained by crossing the pomelo (C. maxima) and the "Moro orange (C. sinensis). The pink grapefruit was originally slightly different from today's one; it was less pigmented, with a thicker skin and less sugary pulp; with the passing of time and the passing of generations, it seems that evolution leads the pink grapefruit towards a real autonomous species of Citrus, as the peculiar characteristics of the cross seem to be easily repeatable and conservable over time.
The pink grapefruit is picked from the first ten days of November until the beginning of spring and, therefore, belongs to the small group of WINTER fruits.
Myths to dispel
Some argue that pink grapefruit, like yellow grapefruit, has slimming properties; the statement is not "completely" correct!
The discovery of a pigment (flavonoid) called naringenin, certainly useful in the fight against oxidative stress (free radicals) and "bad" cholesterol (LDL), has triggered the insights of some Canadian researchers. In this regard, the results obtained from the administration of naringenin on the guinea pigs by the team, they misled the vast majority of readers to the advantage of some supplement merchants (tablets, capsules, thermogenics, etc.). Let's see why!
Nutritional values (per 100 g of edible portion)
This pink grapefruit flavonoid (which is also contained in other citrus fruits) has shown a good metabolic impact on mice, favoring the restoration of optimal blood parameters (cholesterol, triglycerides and glycaemia); in fact, the laboratory guinea pigs examined, after having been subjected to "forced fattening", benefited more from the administration of naringenin compared to others who followed an "ordinary diet without the flavonoid. Dosages and specific information on the diet and weight loss of guinea pigs are not well disclosed and the study does not appear to have been repeated on humans or did not have the same effects on SLIMMING.
As often happens, the molecular interaction of certain substances changes considerably from one animal species to another (just think of the "striking" crab "taken by the scientific community in the study of synephrine, a "sympathomimetic amine extracted from" bitter orange), although it cannot be ruled out that a "diet rich in pink grapefruit can significantly benefit human health."
Use in the kitchen
Pink grapefruit is a citrus fruit commonly associated with the "healthy" image of the diet. It often appears in recipes and slimming diets, due to its low calorie intake and its rich vitamin and salt content. It is not uncommon for grapefruit wedges pink complement desserts such as mixed fruit salad or single dishes (dish and side dish) based on salads with meat or fish. Equally popular are: ice creams, granitas, sorbets, syrups, cocktails, aperitifs and pink grapefruit.
Nutritional characteristics
Compared to yellow grapefruit, pink grapefruit has a higher concentration of anthocyanins and carotenes * (antioxidant pigments), among which the lycopene (retinol equivalent or provitamin A currently subject to many studies by virtue of its alleged characteristics of: hypocholesterolemic, antioxidant and antitumor). On the contrary, all the other nutritional values and the phytocomplex potential of pink grapefruit are comparable to those of yellow grapefruit.
