Tissue Damage Marker

Generality

With the term Marker (indicator), in biochemistry and biology, we mean a molecule that "indicates" a certain tissue damage.
The indicators of this damage can be many and differ according to the type of tissue that is damaged.

When a cell is injured, it releases part of its contents into the interstitial space, and from there into the blood. In normal conditions, however, the cell releases a minimal part of its contents, so it is almost physiological to find intracellular gradients in the circulation; consequently, the pathological aspect emerges only when the intracellular content released into the blood exceeds certain values.
Markers, or "indicators" of tissue damage, can be of various kinds, depending on the place where the lesion occurs; therefore we can find protein, enzymatic, lipid etc. markers.
For this reason, tissue damage markers can be divided into:

• Not very specific markers
• Non-specific markers
• Specific markers
