Generality
Discectomy is a "surgical option used in the case of a herniated disc. This" approach consists in the removal of more or less abundant portions of the damaged intervertebral disc, after having removed the hernia that originated from it.
Discectomy is generally indicated when patients are refractory to conservative treatments (drugs and / or physical therapy) or when they experience increasingly severe symptoms (back pain, loss of sensation, difficulty walking, etc.).
From a practical point of view, the surgeon proceeds under general anesthesia to remove the herniated disc fragment, through the use of more or less invasive techniques, in order to allow the patient a rapid functional recovery.
Should it be necessary to remove a large part of the nucleus pulposus, the discectomy is associated with the positioning of a prosthesis (or a spacer made up of synthetic or autologous bone) between the two affected vertebrae.
