Shutterstock Ketorolac - Chemical Structure
From a chemical point of view, ketorolac is a derivative of acetic acid. It is available in various pharmaceutical formulations, suitable for oral, ocular and parenteral administration.
Medicinal products containing ketorolac for parenteral use can only be dispensed on presentation of a non-repeatable medical prescription (RNR); however, as most of them are classified as class A drugs, their cost can be reimbursed - wholly or partially, depending on the case - by the National Health System (SSN). Medicines for oral use can also be sold only on presentation of a non-repeatable medical prescription, but in this case, as they are classified as class C drugs, their cost is fully borne by the citizen. As for the ketorolac-based eye drops, on the other hand, it is a non-prescription drug (SOP) which, therefore, can be purchased freely at the pharmacy.
