Editorial board Ibuprofen - Chemical Structure
Ibuprofen is available in numerous pharmaceutical formulations (tablets, syrup, oral suspension, oral drops, skin gel, vaginal solutions, suppositories, medicated plasters, etc.) suitable for different routes of administration (oral, topical, vaginal, rectal, intramuscular and intravenous) for the treatment of a great variety of disorders, always characterized by inflammation, pain and / or fever.
On the Italian pharmaceutical market there are numerous ibuprofen-based medicines, both alone and in combination with other active ingredients. Some of these, in order to be dispensed, require the presentation of a medical prescription (generally repeatable; in case of association with codeine, however, not repeatable), while others do not require any type of prescription as they are classified as SOP drugs (Without Prescription medical) or as over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. Medicines containing ibuprofen for intravenous use, on the other hand, are for hospital use, therefore, cannot be sold to the public.
As for reimbursement, some ibuprofen-based medicines are classified as class C drugs - therefore, fully borne by the citizen - while others as class A drugs - therefore, their cost can be reimbursed by the National Health System (SSN ), totally or partially, as the case may be.
