ZINERYT ® is a drug based on Erythromycin + micronized zinc acetate dihydrate
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Antibacterials - Antimicrobial for the treatment of acne
Indications ZINERYT © Erythromycin + Zinc
ZINERYT ® is indicated in the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.
Mechanism of action ZINERYT © Erythromycin + Zinc
ZINERYT © is a medicinal specialty widely used in the dermatological field in the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.
Among the innumerable predisposing conditions to the typical inflammatory lesions present in this pathology, it is possible to find a high concentration of free fatty acids, cause of obstruction of the sebaceous glands with consequent comedogenic phlogistic response.
The antibiotic treatment with erythromycin has proved particularly effective in these cases, reducing the bacterial load of the skin, above all represented by Propionibacetrium acnes and Staphylococcus auerus, by means of a bacteriostatic activity, and therefore also the relative secretion of free fatty acids.
However, recent studies have shown how erythromycin can also carry out an indirect anti-inflammatory action, reducing the production by the aforementioned microbial species of chemotactic elements, capable of recalling the cellular elements of inflammation.
In this regard, the addition of zinc proved to be supportive, appreciably reducing the local concentration of inflammatory cytokines such as IL 1 and IL 6, thus modulating the inflammatory capacities of these molecules.
At the same time, the low systemic absorption of the active ingredients contained in ZINERYT © significantly reduces the side effects of therapy and possible complications.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. Erythromycin and zinc in the treatment of acne
J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol. 2007 Mar; 21: 311-9.
A randomized, single-blind comparison of topical clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide (Duac) and erythromycin + zinc acetate (Zineryt) in the treatment of mild to moderate facial acne vulgaris.
Langner A, Sheehan-Dare R, Layton A.
Recent study that demonstrates how the combined treatment with erythromycin and zinc can be effective and well tolerated in patients suffering from acne vulgaris, guaranteeing a good therapeutic resolution in a few weeks of treatment.
2 . EFFECTIVENESS OF THE 4% Erythromycin dosage
Br J Dermatol. 1989 Oct; 121: 497-502.
A 4% erythromycin and zinc combination (Zineryt) versus 2% erythromycin (Eryderm) in acne vulgaris: a randomized, double-blind comparative study.
Habbema L, Koopmans B, Menke HE, Doornweerd S, De Boulle K.
Dutch study that tests the efficacy of the medicinal product Zineryt, showing a greater efficacy of the 4% erythromycin dosage in improving the degree of severity of acne.
3.ZINC AND "PHARMACOKINETIC PROPERTIES OF" erythromycin
Skin Pharmacol. 1996; 9: 104-10.
Evaluation of the effect of zinc acetate on the stratum corneum penetration kinetics of erythromycin in healthy male volunteers.
van Hoogdalem EJ, Terpstra IJ, Baven AL.
Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic study that demonstrates how the presence of zinc at the same time as that of erythromycin can improve the persistence of the antibiotic, also allowing a greater ability to penetrate the stratum corneum.
Method of use and dosage
ZINERYT ©
Powder and solvent for cutaneous solution containing per ml of solution 50 mg of erythromycin and 12 mg of zinc acetate.
It is advisable to apply the correct amount of solution on the area to be treated twice a day.
In most cases, treatment for 10-12 weeks is generally effective.
Warnings ZINERYT © Erythromycin + Zinc
The erythromycin contained in ZINERYT © could be responsible for sensitization phenomena on an allergic basis and photosensitization.
For this reason it is recommended to interrupt the treatment if signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity appear, avoiding direct exposure of the treated area to ultraviolet rays.
Avoid direct contact between the medicine and mucous membranes.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Despite the low systemic absorption that characterizes this medicine, it would be preferable to limit its use during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding, exclusively to cases of real and inevitable necessity.
Interactions
