A mole is a circumscribed skin lesion of variable size, flat or raised, more or less pigmented. Moles may be present from birth or early childhood (congenital) or appear later in life (acquired).
Their onset depends both on hereditary factors and on exposure to solar radiation.
Prevention is the most effective weapon for early identification of melanoma. In the vast majority of cases, in fact, recovery is possible if treatment begins in the early stages of tumor development.
This strategy is implemented at various levels, controlling risk factors to avoid tumor development, undergoing periodic dermatological visits to identify the tumor at an extremely early stage and surgically removing suspicious lesions.
The self-examination of the skin surface by the patient himself, carried out with method and regularity between one dermatological visit and the next, allows to monitor any changes in the appearance of a pre-existing mole and to recognize the characteristics of melanomas.
