Muira puama is one of the many names attributed to Ptychopetalum ovata, or tree of potency, referring to its aphrodisiac and invigorating properties. This small plant, native to the Amazon rainforest, is used to solve gastrointestinal, neuromuscular and rheumatism problems; it is also particularly known as an aphrodisiac and tonic for the nervous system.
Clinical studies conducted in France to investigate the repercussions on the physical and psychological aspects attributable to the sexual sphere, have shown that muira puama is effective in restoring sexual desire in 60% of patients, with a positive effect in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 53%. of cases [Waynberg Am J Nat Med 1: 8-9].
More recently, a formulation based on muira puama and gingko improved the desire, fantasies and sexual intercourse of 202 adult women who complained of decreased libido [Waymberg & Brewer Adv Ther 17: 255-262]
None of the chemical compounds identified in muira puama seem to support these characteristics, which are therefore to be attributed to the phytocomplex, that is to the set of substances (in this case esters of fatty acids and bitter substances, such as the muirapuamine alkaloid) contained in the drug.
In accordance with its popular use, muira puama is recommended in case of stress, nervous fatigue and to relieve the symptoms of depression, as an adaptogenic, anti-fatigue and anti-stress drug. Also in this case there are some studies that testify the validity of these properties.
The side effects associated with the use of muira puama are mild and mostly limited to the possible appearance of occasional pain in the stomach and head, associated with nervousness and hyperagitation.
