In most cases, ankle fracture episodes are the result of an excessive rotation of the ankle, an accidental fall, a jump from a great height, or a traffic accident.
There are at least 4 types of ankle fractures: the unimalleolar type fracture, the bimalleolar type fracture, the trimalleolar type fracture and the talus fracture.
Typical symptoms of a general ankle fracture consist of: pain, bruising, swelling, skeletal deformities and lameness.
For a correct diagnosis of ankle fracture and its triggering causes, physical examination, medical history and X-rays are almost always sufficient.
Treatment of an ankle fracture depends on the severity of the injury; for minor fractures, the treatment is conservative, while for more severe fractures, the treatment is surgical.
