Generality
The ligaments of the ankle are the bands of fibrous connective tissue, which connect the malleoli of the tibia and fibula with the bones of the tarsus called the talus, calcaneus and navicular bone.
The ankle ligaments can be divided into two groups: the deltoid (or medial) ligaments and the lateral ligaments. The deltoid ligaments are four and reside on the inner side of the ankle; the lateral ligaments, on the other hand, are three and take place on the external side of the ankle.
The function of the ligaments of the ankle is to ensure stability to the latter.
The ligaments in the ankle can be injured, such as strains or ruptures.
