Although the attention of people suffering from constipation is often focused on the choice of effective drugs for the treatment of constipation, it is equally important to know all those drugs that can cause or aggravate constipation.
We speak of iatrogenic constipation (or constipation) when the disorder follows medical or pharmacological therapies. There are numerous commonly used drugs involved in the onset or worsening of constipation, the most important of which are grouped by categories and listed by active principle in the table below. Apparently paradoxical is the inclusion in the list of some drugs used to combat the constipation, such as certain types of laxatives; in fact, the abuse of these medicines - for example when they are taken in excessive doses or for prolonged periods - tends to reduce their laxative efficacy by aggravating constipation.
