INDOM COLLIRIO ® is a drug based on Indomethacin
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Indications INDOM COLLIRIO ® Indomethacin
INDOM COLLIRIO ® is useful in the treatment of painful conditions of the anterior segment of the eye, such as those associated with ophthalmological surgery.
Mechanism of action INDOM COLLIRIO ® Indomethacin
INDOM COLLIRIO ® is a drug based on Indomethacin, an active ingredient derived from arylacetic acid and belonging to the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, commonly used in ophthalmology clinics for the treatment of inflammatory states affecting the anterior segment of the eye.
The particular selectivity of use is essentially due to the typical pharmacokinetic properties of the drug, which allow Indomethacin to concentrate very quickly at the level of aqueous humor, maintaining an effective action for four hours.
From the molecular point of view, however, the anti-inflammatory action of Indomethacin is closely linked to the characteristic inhibitory activity exerted on cyclooxygenases, enzymes capable, during traumatic events of various kinds, to convert membrane phospholipids such as arachidonic acid into chemical mediators with of pro-inflammatory and painful activity known as prostaglandins.
Different studies show how the ocular instillation of Indomethacin can guarantee a significant reduction of the inflammatory infiltrate in the site, reducing both the pain stimulus and the tissue damage, as well as exerting a trophic action against the damaged epithelium.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. THE PHARMACOKINETY OF INDOMETHACIN IN EYE DROPS
J Ocul Pharmacol Ther. 2011 Dec; 27: 571-6. Epub 2011 Nov 7.
Ocular pharmacokinetics profile of different indomethacin topical formulations.
Bucolo C, Melilli B, Piazza C, Zurria M, Drago F.
Interesting pharmacological work that tries to characterize all the pharmacokinetic characteristics, including the differences, between the various indomethacin-based products on the market. Fortunately, all products appear to have good efficacy and a comparable pharmacokinetic profile.
2 .NEW SOLUBILIZATION SYSTEMS
Curr Eye Res. 2011 Mar; 36: 208-16. Epub 2011 Jan 28.
Formulation of indomethacin eye drops via complexation with cyclodextrins.
Halim Mohamed MA, Mahmoud AA.
Innovative delivery method characterized by the "association of" Indomethacin with cyclodextrins. This particular chemical form seems to improve the solubility and stability of Indomethacin in aqueous products, enhancing its therapeutic efficacy.
3L "INDOMETHACIN IN THE PRE-OPERATIVE PHASES.
Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol. 2002 Nov; 240: 929-35. Epub 2002 Oct 30.
Efficacy of indomethacin 0.1% and fluorometholone 0.1% on conjunctival inflammation following chronic application of antiglaucomatous drugs.
Baudouin C, Nordmann JP, Denis P, Creuzot-Garcher C, Allaire C, Trinquand C.
Study that demonstrates how topical treatment with indomethacin can be effective in reducing conjunctival inflammation, improving the outcomes of surgery and at the same time reducing possible complications.
Method of use and dosage
INDOM COLLIRIO ®
Suspension for ophthalmic use of 500 mg of Indomethacin per 100 ml of solution.
The dosage schedule should be defined by the competent physician, based on the physio-pathological characteristics of the patient, the severity of the clinical picture and the therapeutic objectives.
Warnings INDOM COLLIRIO ® Indomethacin
Although INDOM COLLIRIO ® is well tolerated and free from particular side effects, it is necessary to remember that the prolonged use of this product could facilitate the onset of sensitization phenomena, in some cases so serious as to require the suspension of the treatment.
In order to maintain the sterility of the product, it is recommended to use all necessary precautions for use.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Although the systemic absorption of Indomethacin, linked to the use of INDOM COLLIRIO ®, is of little significance, the use of this medicine during pregnancy is not recommended given the potential toxic effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on fetal health.
Interactions
The topical ophthalmic administration of Indomethacin minimizes the potential drug interactions expected between INDOM COLLIRIO ® and other active ingredients.
In this regard, it would be useful to recall only the possible interfering action of "Indomethacin" on the local hypotensive activity of drugs commonly used in ophthalmic surgery.
Contraindications INDOM COLLIRIO ® Indomethacin
The use of INDOM COLLIRIO ® is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the active principle or to structurally and chemically related products and to the various excipients present in the product.
The use of INDOM COLLIRIO ® is not recommended even in patients with contact lenses.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
Fortunately, the topical use of Indomethacin is not associated with the numerous side effects envisaged for systemic therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, although signs such as redness and conjunctival burning, edema of the eyelids and of the structures of the anterior segment may be observed, especially at the local level. of the eye, keratitis and itching.
Note
INDOM COLLIRIO ® can only be sold with a medical prescription.
