In all its parts (tuber and herbaceous parts), aconite contains polycyclic alkaloids toxic to the central nervous system, in particular aconitine, capable of causing dizziness, paraesthesia, hypothermia, arrhythmias and breathing disturbances.
Aconite was once recommended against neuralgia and numerous other ailments, for which however it has never been shown to be effective.
