Naturally, as NAO, in order to carry out its therapeutic action, this active principle must be administered orally. Currently (April 2019), the only medicinal product available in Italy based on edoxaban is Lixiana®, in which the active ingredient is found in the form of edoxaban tosilate. It is a prescription medicine only upon presentation of a repeatable limitative medical prescription (RRL - medicine that can be sold to the public only on prescription from hospitals or specialists.) However, since it is a product classified as a Class A drug, its cost can be reimbursed by the National Health System (SSN).
