The cause often lies in the poor adequacy of the type of training (sets, repetitions and recoveries).
We will start with a brief anatomical and functional introduction on the triceps of the sura, essential to understand how to train the calf muscles "better".
We will then continue with the in-depth study related to the training methods of the calves, without neglecting the explanation of the conclusions dealt with in this regard.
of the calf comprise several fleshy bellies, referred to as triceps of the sura, and they train for the plantar flexion motor function of the ankle.
The triceps of the surae comprise the muscle soleus, i gastrocnemas and, in part, also the muscle footbed.
Sagittal ROM of the ankle
Considering the ankle at a basal angle of 90 °, the range of movement (ROM) in the sagittal plane of the ankle is approximately 65-75 °, respectively divided as follows:
- 40-55 ° plantar flexion;
- 10-20 ° dorsiflexion.
As we will see below, the recruitment of the soleus and gastrocnemas changes according to the joint position of the knee.
Moreover, even if there is no clear distinction, the soleus works more (in percentage terms, not absolute) in the first degrees of flexion, while the gastrocnemius over the physiological ROM of 90 °.
