Why is Alpha Eye Drops used? What is it for?
Alpha eye drops contain the active ingredient naphazoline nitrate which belongs to the group of ocular mucosal decongestants. Collirio Alfa is used in case of redness, tearing, burning and itching of the eyes, caused by irritation phenomena (excessive exposure to dust, smoke, etc.).
Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 4 days of treatment.
Contraindications When Alpha eye drops should not be used
Do not use Alpha Eye Drops
- If you are allergic to naphazoline nitrate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
- If you have narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) or other serious eye diseases.
- In children under twelve years of age.
- If you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (antidepressants).
Precautions for use What you need to know before taking Alpha eye drops
Talk to your doctor before using Alpha Eye Drops:
- if you suffer from hypertension (increased blood pressure), hyperthyroidism (increased thyroid function), heart problems, bronchial asthma and hyperglycaemia (diabetes).
- In case of infections, pus, foreign bodies in the eye, mechanical, chemical or heat damage.
Children and adolescents
Do not use in children under twelve years of age. Take special care to keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children as it can cause CNS depression (severe sedation or hypotonia, i.e. muscle weakness) if ingested accidentally.
Interactions What medications or foods may change the effect of Alpha Eye Drops
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Although the action of Alpha Eye Drops occurs mainly in the eye, do not use it if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (antidepressants) and in the two weeks following such use, as severe hypertensive crises (significant rise in blood pressure) may arise. .

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use Alpha Eye Drops only if clearly needed and under the direct supervision of your doctor.
Alpha eye drops (bottle) contains benzalkonium chloride
May cause eye irritation. Avoid contact with soft contact lenses. Remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reapplying. Note the bleaching action of soft contact lenses.
Alpha eye drops (single-dose container) do not contain benzalkonium chloride
The single-dose containers can be used by contact lens wearers or by those who show hypersensitivity to benzalkonium chloride.
For those who carry out sports activities: this medicine contains ethyl alcohol, the use of the drug without therapeutic necessity constitutes doping and can in any case determine positive anti-doping tests.

Alpha eye drops are for ophthalmic (in the eye) use. It is "forbidden" to take other than those reported in terms of dosage schedule and route of administration.
Dosage

Use in children and adolescents
It is contraindicated for use in children and adolescents under the age of 12 years
Overdose What to do if you have taken too much alpha eye drops
Strictly adhere to the recommended doses. The product, if accidentally ingested or if used for a long time in excessive doses, can cause toxic phenomena, especially in children. In case of accidental ingestion / intake of an overdose of Alpha Eye Drops, notify your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
Side Effects What are the side effects of Alpha Eye Drops
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The use of the product can sometimes cause dilation of the pupil, systemic effects of absorption (hypertension, heart disease, hyperglycemia), increased pressure inside the eye, nausea, headache.
Rarely, hypersensitivity phenomena (difficulty in breathing, lowering of blood pressure or the appearance of skin rashes) may occur. Expiry and Retention
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

04.1 Therapeutic indications

04.4 Special warnings and appropriate precautions for use
The product, although having poor systemic absorption, should be used with caution in patients suffering from hypertension, hyperthyroidism, cardiac disorders, bronchial asthma and hyperglycemia (diabetes).
Infections, pus, foreign bodies in the eye, mechanical, chemical, heat damage require medical attention.
The product should be kept out of the reach of children as accidental ingestion can cause CNS depression (marked sedation or hypotonia).
Since the product, in the 10 ml bottle pack, contains benzalkonium chloride, soft contact lenses should not be worn during treatment.
Since benzalkonium chloride is not present in the single-dose package, this can be used by contact lens wearers, or by those who show hypersensitivity to benzalkonium chloride.
04.5 Interactions with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Alpha eye drops should not be used in people undergoing treatment with antidepressant drugs (MAOIs) and in the two weeks following such treatment as severe hypertensive crises can arise.
