Generality
Pepsinogen is the inactive form of the pepsin enzyme. This precursor is secreted by the gastric mucosa and, in order to be made active (like pepsin), must be processed by hydrochloric acid.
About 1% of pepsinogen is able to enter the bloodstream and can be a useful indicator of gastric disease.
