The CT scan of the abdomen is of support in the diagnosis of diseases affecting the abdominal-pelvic organs and in identifying the causes of abdominal or pelvic pain, which leads the doctor to believe that a serious health condition may be present.
With a total duration of 30 minutes at the most, the CT scan of the abdomen requires a certain preparation (in particular if the use of a contrast medium is required) and, for its correct execution, requires the patient to be completely immobile.
The risks of CT scan of the abdomen are related to the dose of ionizing radiation to which the patient is exposed during the examination and to the contrast medium (if it is intended to be used), which in some individuals is the cause of an allergic reaction.
Contraindicated in the case of pregnancy, obesity, diabetes and renal insufficiency, the CT scan of the abdomen provides excellent quality images, which allows to draw up very precise diagnoses.
A CT scan of the abdomen is also known as an abdominal CT or abdominal-pelvic CT.
