Hearing impairment can be congenital or secondary to aging, infectious diseases, taking ototoxic drugs, physical or acoustic trauma. Conditions that compromise the ear canal, tympanic membrane or middle ear structures result in conductive hearing loss, while processes affecting the cochlea and nerve pathways that transduce hearing sensation cause sensorineural hearing loss.

To prevent hearing loss, a number of measures can be taken, but in some cases the process is impossible to reverse.
