Not to be confused with endolymph, perilymph plays a decisive role in the auditory function: in fact, it initiates the process of activation of the ciliated cells of the organ of Corti which are responsible for converting acoustic information into a nervous impulse.
Perilymph is a liquid with an ionic composition, in which the prevailing ion is the sodium cation (Na +); perilymph is reminiscent of plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in many ways.
Perilymph seems to play a role, together with endolymph, in a rather well-known disease of the inner ear: Ménière's syndrome.
