Bromocriptine is a semi-synthetic compound that derives from "ergotamine. Ergotamine is a natural alkaloid produced by" ascomycete Claviceps purpurea. This fungus - also known as Ergot - is a parasite of grasses and mainly affects rye. When rye is infested with this fungus, it is referred to as ergot.
